The Fundamentals of Dachshund Training

westminster dog show

Dachshund is one of the cutest breed of dogs out there but it is also one of the hardest to train! If you are looking for puppies that are for sale in these kind of breed, better check out some of the fundamental ways of how to train them.

Before anything else, just like any dog breed, age is a big factor in dog training. You must start when your Dachshund is young, and make sure to let him get as much exercise as possible.

They may be small dogs, but they are bred to be hunting dogs that dig out vermin. They're very high-energy, and if they don't get a chance to expend that energy, it will most likely come back to haunt you!

A Dachshund that gets the necessary exercise, the training process will be much easier, but even at best, training must be firm and well-planned.

Train your Dachshund in short 5-minute sessions. Once he decides he doesn't want to listen to you, it's hard to break through his determination. Try to squeeze in as much training as you can in those 5 minutes, before he has a chance to consider whether he wants to obey or not.

A Dachshund must be trained in basics such as "sit", "stay", and most importantly, "down". How far a Dachshund can safely jump or climb is severely limited due to long spines and short legs. Carry them up and down stairs, and don't allow them to jump onto furniture. Teach these rules early, and reinforce often.
