Boxer Dog Breed Origin and History

This breed originates from Germany and finds its early ancestor to be a mastiff type dog, the large Molossian Hound. Later, this dog evolved into what was called the Bullenbeisser. The Bullenbeiszer's roots go back to Belgium and these ancestors were known as great hunting and working dogs.

Originally used to hunt wild boar and later used for working with cattle these dogs eventually diverged into different types, the smaller of which were called the Brabanter Bullenbeiszer. After mixing with a forerunner of the English Bulldog, the dog became what is known today as the Boxer breed around the mid to late 19th century. The Boxer dog origin and history becomes well documented at that point as dog breed clubs were formed in Germany in the 1860s.

Boxer Dog Breed History

What we know of as the Boxer today can be traced to the 1830s when a breeder crossbred the Brabanter Bullenbeiszer with the English Bulldog, but the Boxer dog breed history really begins in the 1860s as breeders began to establish and develop guidelines for the breed. In 1895 the Boxer Club was formally formed and further improvements were made to the standards of the Boxer dog breed.

Although initially the Boxer dog breed was generally white, by 1925 white was not accepted as a proper color for the breed. In fact, the color of choice now is fawn and brindle and any dog with more than a third of its coat white will be disqualified in AKC events.

This dog breed came to the United States around the beginning of the 1900s but did not become a popular dog breed until the 1940s. The breed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1904 and the first Boxer Champion was recognized in 1915. In 1949 a famous Boxer dog, Bang Away, won Best in Show at the Westminster and went on to win 121 more Best in Shows over the course of six years.

Bang Away became a famous dog, appearing on the front of magazine such as Life and Esquire. Due to the success of this one dog, the breed became very popular in the United States at the time and continues to be one of the 10 most popular breeds as determined by the American Kennel Club.

Koi Competitions: Why Enter and How?

Koi competitions are a popular event as more people discover how enjoyable these creatures are to watch. The competitions are fun for spectators and especially for owners. If a person has koi and would like to enter them into this type of show, there are a few steps to keep in mind.

Koi are ornamental fish bred from "Japanese carp." They are usually kept in special koi ponds, CrossOver ponds, or Hybrid ponds. They come in a rainbow of colors. The most common colors to see are red, black, yellow, blue, cream and white. There are 15 main types of koi. When people enter them into a contest, it is important to know what type he or she has. It is usually easy to tell by the fish's color. For instance, Gold Ogon are metallic gold in color. Showa are black with white and red patterns. Kohaku are white and have different red patterns on them.

Entering fish into contests is much like entering dogs into competitions such as the Westminster Kennel Club show. People can find koi shows by reading magazines, blogs, listings of upcoming events, interacting with an available online community and pond tools. By connecting with other koi owners, a person can learn the best types of competitions in which to enter his or her fish.

Some competitions are free, while others cost a fee. Some even require membership in certain organizations. Each competition will provide a list of requirements, some of which may be a picture of one's fish, the water temperature of the fish's pond or tank and a certain container. One may also want to familiarize with certain Japanese terms associated with koi, such as the words used to describe the colors. For instance, Hi means red, a popular color of many Japanese carp.

Many competitions offer prizes for winning fish. The entries who take the highest rank often have the honor of being displayed on koi club websites in the Hall of Fame section. Participants in shows sometimes have the chance of winning door prizes, like trips to Japan.

Koi are fabulous fish worthy of showing off, which is one of the reasons why competitions have grown in popularity over the years. Owners have started to take the opportunity to enter their fish into these shows. It is an enjoyable way to have fun and stay competitive, and it's also a way to meet other fish owners and make new friends.

Sporting Dogs: Top Three Hunters/House Pets

Sporting dogs are breeds of dogs that were actually used for hunting. They have been bred to assist hunters in tracking and retrieving game. However, hunting is now a strictly regulated activity, and these dogs now function more as house pets than as hunters.

These breeds are fairly active and could range from small to medium-sized dogs like Retrievers. They make great family pets because of their mild temperaments and they are very good with children too. The following would be the top three most popular sporting dogs. Because of their intelligence and beauty, they are usually used for dog shows as well.

• The Labrador Retriever is perhaps one of the most popular breeds of dogs out there. These dogs are very active, smart and are great with children. They always aim to please their masters and you could always see them with their happy eyes and smiles. Labrador Retrievers are active dogs so you would need to exercise them regularly so that they could expend some of their energy. Labs, when kept chained or caged without any exercise, would become highly over active and would be hard to control. You would want a dog that can easily be controlled because once he gains dominance over you, he would be the master and you would be the dog - metaphorically speaking, of course.

• Cocker Spaniels would have to be on my own list of beautiful dogs. They have long, shiny coats and wonderful puppy-dog eyes. Because of their wonderful coats and legs that look like they're wearing trousers, these dogs are usually competed in dog shows. With a coat like that, though, you would have to take care of it meticulously because it is prone to matting. Despite its docile appearance, the Cocker Spaniel is actually used to help hunters in retrieving game.

• The Irish Setters have been viewed as highly active dogs and could sometimes go downright goofy on you. Watching them play around is fun and you might not even notice that quite some time has already passed. Aggression has never been part of their personality makeup, making them great family pets but really bad guard dogs. However, you have to watch your dogs closely when you have small children and toddlers around because they are so lively, they might just knock them over.

If you want to take in a dog, you would have to be ready for the responsibility that comes with it. Being a responsible dog owner does not only mean that you feed him and give him shelter. It also means that you have to give him love, play with him, discipline him when he does something wrong and take him to the vet when he is sick. Come to think of it, owning a dog is almost somewhat like having kids.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has been accused of murdering, slaughtering 14000 dogs and cats from the years 1998 through 2005 at their headquarters in Virginia, United States of America (USA). That is about 2000 cats and dogs having their lives extinguished at the hands of a group masquerading as having concern for their welfare. This mockery continues through the perverts in Hollywood who whenever a movie is made using an animal or animals they must satisfy any concerns by PETA as to the safety of the animals used. It has been reported that animal so-called rights lunatics throw red paint on people wearing fur coats, thus destroying the coats. This only causes the further harvesting of fur bearing animals to produce replacement fur coats. Recently in New York City (NYC) at Madison Square Garden there was a dog show by t he Westminster Kennel Club. PETA objects to the breeding of dogs to obtain a pure line for the animals. In their form of protests they wore the white robes and hoods of the Klu Klux Klan (KKK or KKK). A group with a violent history and hate towards black Americans. The KKK as honored by PETA, have been responsible for the murdering, muleulating, and hanging of blacks in America for about 100 years. The white robes and white pointed hoods of this group are offensive to blacks and all decent Americans on so many levels. But not to PETA as PETA finds the KKK as a group to promote through their childish behavior.
